Attorney Diane A. Shearer is a trial lawyer and the founder of Shearer Legal Defense Firm, LLC, where she provides strategic, compassionate, and client-centered representation to individuals facing serious criminal charges. Diane has represented hundreds of individuals in criminal cases, handling matters at every stage of the criminal process—from bond and preliminary hearings to pretrial motions, evidentiary hearings, plea negotiations, and felony jury trials. She understands that when someone is accused of a crime, the stakes extend far beyond the courtroom. A criminal case places a person's freedom, family, reputation, livelihood, and future at risk.

Diane approaches every case with the understanding that effective criminal defense begins with careful preparation. She examines the evidence, identifies critical legal and factual issues, challenges weaknesses in the government's case, and develops a defense strategy tailored to the individual circumstances of each client. Just as importantly, she believes that every client deserves an attorney who will listen, communicate, and ensure that the client's voice is heard throughout the process.

Diane brings a distinctive breadth of experience to her criminal defense practice. Over the course of her legal career, she has served as a judicial law clerk, prosecutor, appellate advocate, public-interest civil litigator, and criminal defense attorney. This experience allows her to evaluate criminal cases from multiple perspectives. She understands how prosecutors analyze and build cases, how judges evaluate legal arguments, how appellate courts review decisions made in the trial courts, and how those decisions can affect the person standing accused.

Before becoming a criminal defense attorney, Diane served as an Assistant District Attorney in the Office of the Bronx County District Attorney, where she practiced as an appellate prosecutor. She drafted appellate briefs and post-conviction motions and argued numerous cases before the New York State Appellate Courts. That experience sharpened skills that are critical to her work today: analyzing complex records and evidence, conducting in-depth legal research, identifying weaknesses in legal arguments, and presenting persuasive arguments to courts.

Earlier in her career, Diane served as a judicial law clerk in the United States District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina. Working within the federal judiciary provided her with valuable insight into judicial decision-making and the importance of careful legal analysis, thorough preparation, and persuasive written advocacy.

Diane later devoted a portion of her career to public-interest civil litigation in New York City, representing individuals and families facing significant legal challenges. That work strengthened a principle that remains central to her practice today: every person deserves meaningful access to the legal system, skilled advocacy, and representation that respects their dignity regardless of income, background, or circumstance.

Diane earned her Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School in 2011, where she served as a founding board member and associate editor of the Columbia Journal of Race and the Law. Before attending law school, she earned a Bachelor of Arts from Brown University and a Master of Arts from Columbia University.

At the heart of Diane's practice is a simple belief: every person deserves to be heard, treated fairly, and vigorously defended. She brings careful preparation, sound judgment, strategic thinking, and determined advocacy to every case while never losing sight of the person whose life is affected by the outcome.
